How far can Thai Boys' Love (BL) series go as "soft power" that captures international attention? BL has become one of the more intriguing forms of media for actors and production companies alike. Many people understand these Thai BL series as content made for LGBTQ audiences, even though, in reality, they are produced to sell to broader markets well beyond LGBTQ viewers.
If we look back seriously, "Love Sick" (2014) was a boy-love series that was truly ahead of its time. What is even more striking, if you notice it, is that it aired on free-to-air television, on Channel 9, back then. After that, we almost never saw another boy-love series on free TV again, until the broadcasting system shifted into the digital era. Viewers gained many more choices, and market competition grew fiercer. As audience demand rose, producers naturally had to respond to a market with real spending power.
The same is true off the screen. Before it became a TV genre, "yaoi," or BL, in the world of fiction and literature had already lived through its own dark age. Online novel-hosting boards, and even publishers themselves, kept it at arm's length, viewing it as a genre that could not be sold on bookstore shelves (even though today you can find large, dedicated BL sections practically shouting, "I'm a BL novel, come read me!").
In time, it earned enough acceptance from the public to step proudly out into the open as a legitimate literary genre in its own right, not limited to male-male stories. Female-female (GL) works and LGBT stories more broadly have drawn just as much interest.
How do BL novels relate to BL series?
Very often, the novels chosen to be adapted into Thai BL series are already famous titles with a built-in fan base ready to lend support, and eager to follow how the characters they love will be brought to life as real "people," along with every other detail of the production. This is why many series already have fans following along from the very first day of filming, because those fans were readers of the source novels long before. (Compared with the boy-meets-girl dramas of the past, the resemblance is significant. It shows that "fandoms," or superfans, have always existed. We simply were not aware of them.)
On the other side, a BL series is an important launchpad for new actors, letting them become public figures even when they had no fan base at all beforehand. Yet this same step becomes a shadow that follows an actor everywhere. You can rise to fame through a "shipped couple" and their "moments," whether genuine or crafted for marketing. But it becomes difficult if you later want to take on other roles as a straight leading "man," because your public image has already been locked in as someone who is not that kind of man.
On top of that, there are longtime fans who may not see you as a celebrity or actor at all, but only as one half of a shipped couple. That is something you will have to face and manage if you do not intend to confine your career to a single ship and a single series.
Even so, many actors are still willing to give everything to their first BL series, because the evidence is plain: BL series make a great deal of money, both in ratings and in the tangible profits that come from managing everything connected to a show's two leads. This is another reason why even a mainstream broadcaster like Thailand's Channel 3 has stepped into this market. If you can satisfy fans to the fullest, they are ready to give back in every possible way, both directly and indirectly (and that is before we even mention overseas fans, whose average spending per person is often even higher).
Can BL series become soft power for Thailand?
The answer is yes, it is possible, and in fact it is already happening, and happening remarkably well. The one thing missing is concrete support from the government or from the other organizations whose role this should be, because they simply do not see the picture the way the people doing the work do.
Soft power, or "gentle power," is really about being drawn toward something without being addressed directly. We watch Korean dramas, see beautiful settings, and want to travel there, and that already counts as Korea's soft power. Did you know that the finale of one Thai BL series trended on Weibo and other Chinese forums, and that Thai BL has even climbed international Twitter trends, including worldwide trends? That alone shows just how much international audiences care about Thai BL content.
What do Thai BL series actually offer?
It is disappointing that, so often, producers and actors cannot break out of the mold. The storylines are campus-life series that rarely venture to genuinely beautiful locations, and rarely showcase anything that makes viewers want to eat, buy, or do the same. Or the producers simply do not treat this as important, focusing instead on scenes of the two characters' romance or intimacy, so that the "exportable" element never does the work it could.
Messy as that is, to be fair, the mere fact that a BL series becomes famous abroad, spawning meet-and-greets, fan meetings, and even concerts, is already enough to generate income, from bringing overseas fans to Thailand to eat and spend, all the way to supporting products made by Thai people themselves.
This is something worth watching closely in the years ahead. If the government comes to see what the BL industry already sees, and if producers and actors step out of the comfort zone of campus-romance plots, Thailand could well become a country whose soft power rests on its famous BL actors, whose work benefits every part of society.
