Blood-donation eligibility should be assessed using the blood service’s current criteria, relevant exposures, health, and testing—not a blanket claim that “LGBTQ+ people cannot donate.” Sexual orientation and gender identity are not the same as an individual exposure history, and criteria can change.

Check the Current Criteria

Questionnaires, deferral periods, and exclusions depend on the service and date. Read the latest donor screening form from the Thai Red Cross National Blood Centre or the collection service and ask before attending if wording is unclear. An old article describing a permanent deferral may not reflect current rules.

Answer Screening Questions Accurately

Every donation is tested, but tests have window periods and other limits. Inaccurate answers can affect recipient safety. Ask to discuss a question privately with staff instead of guessing. Donor information should be handled confidentially under the service’s procedures.

Blood Donation Is Not an HIV Test

Use a dedicated HIV or STI testing service if you want to know your status. Donor screening protects the blood supply and is not designed to provide individual diagnosis or counseling.

If You Are Not Currently Eligible

A deferral does not define a person’s worth or complete health status. You can support donor recruitment, invite eligible people to donate, or help blood services in other ways. If a criterion appears discriminatory, request the written basis and use the service’s feedback or complaint channel.
