Sexual diversity does exist within the Boys’ Love (BL) entertainment industry—but there’s always a “but” that follows. Every year, in overseas entertainment industries, there are media outlets that report the numbers on the “sexual diversity of characters” across the media landscape, whether in films, series, or stage plays. Anything counted as media has its on-screen sexual diversity tallied, in order to survey what each media space still has or lacks—because they recognize that how media portrays gender and sexuality carries real weight over the thinking and attitudes of the new generation.
The BL entertainment industry has more gender-diverse characters
In the most recent year of data collected, the numbers showed that there are indeed more gender-diverse characters. But sometimes these characters play no meaningful role in the story, or carry no weight in how the film unfolds. Most concerning of all: since 2017, not a single transgender woman character has appeared on screen again.
Turning back to look at our own country, Thailand is seen by many nations as a place that grants freedom to sexual diversity and self-expression—simply because we don’t have the kind of opposition to gender diversity seen in Korea, with its protests against marriage-equality law, or the violence directed at gender-diverse people in the Middle East. But that does not mean Thailand is a country that offers true equality to sexual diversity.
We have space for you, but with conditions attached. Take a simple phrase that has always concealed a problem: “Be whatever you want, as long as you’re a good person.” Being a good person isn’t wrong—it’s exactly as it should be. But on the flip side, have we ever heard a father or mother say to their daughter or son, “It’s fine to be a woman, as long as you’re a good person,” or “It’s fine to be a man, as long as you’re a good person”? Never—not once—because they see that as perfectly normal.
A sexual orientation that doesn’t match society’s expectations
So is being someone whose sexual orientation doesn’t match society’s expectations abnormal? Of course not. That is exactly why there’s no need to tack conditions onto it at all. If people saw gender-diverse people as equals, this might seem like a “small” thing to the average person—but often it is precisely these small things that stand between them and the equal human rights they deserve yet do not receive, such as marriage equality: the law that guarantees the right to have a life partner of one’s choosing under legal protection.
Coming back once more to media and the BL entertainment industry: gender-diverse characters have existed in Thai media for a long time, but the weight given to them has varied—so little, in fact, that they barely affected any storyline, whether they were present or not. That is, until “BL series” came along and revolutionized things, claiming their place as a genre that generates income both on screen and behind the scenes—so much so that even “mainstream media” had to jump into this market to keep up.
The BL entertainment industry and Thai series
Thailand is one of the countries that produces BL series very well when it comes to reaching international audiences around the world. But if we’re talking about quality BL series that genuinely reflect sexual diversity and the real pain of queer lives, we’d have to spend days racking our brains over which titles even qualify—because most BL series lean heavily toward campus life, or else tell the story of two men who first have to draw people in mainly with their good looks, with the plot sorted out only afterward. In an interview titled “BL Series and Sexual Diversity” by Media Alert (2021), Asst. Prof. Dr. Purin Naksing offered an overall perspective on BL series and the acceptance of gender equality, as follows:
“There are so many BL series—if I remember correctly, dozens of them; if they were books, there would probably be hundreds. Do any of them speak to the rights of gender-diverse people? The answer is no. They don’t tell us how we can live amid diversity, or how we can accept LGBT people who are different. Instead, we’re talking about men who meet in the story, argue, and fall in love. Audiences just want to watch the shipping moments, the pillow-biting romantic scenes, the love scenes—maybe nothing too steamy, just sweet and flirty. The plot gives you that giddy feeling and then it’s over. Nowhere does it address rights, mutual respect, or educating viewers on how to treat gender-diverse people.
Only a few types of gender-diverse people get reproduced over and over, because good-looking men with good bodies sell. The newcomers entering the industry all share the same qualities: conventionally attractive, masculine, or Korean-looking—round and round it goes.”
Diversity and gender equality
In truth, the push for diversity and gender equality in BL series has been debated for quite some time—from the casting of straight men who don’t actually share the sexual orientation of the characters they play, to the question of how the plots and scripts themselves help audiences understand different or diverse sexual orientations.
The author can understand why. Here are the reasons:
- People in Thai society generally don’t think entertainment media influences people’s decisions and attitudes—even though, in reality, producers create this content specifically to sell into the market. And the core fan base of BL series is women, not men, nor the gay men who watch certain BL series and are left puzzled, wondering whether real life is actually anything like that.
- The next reason: Thai society is fiercely competitive. According to a recent report, Bangkok ranks among the top cities where people work overtime—which lines up with the many who feel, “I want to watch a series just to unwind.” There is nothing wrong with that mindset. There has even been a comment along the lines of, “Women aren’t obligated to drive some gender agenda for the gender-diverse community.” But let’s not forget that gender equality is everyone’s concern; it affects all of us as equal human beings.
- And the final reason: series made with sincerity that genuinely reflect society… don’t enjoy the same popularity as series built from the start to please an actor’s fan base. It’s a dark irony, but producing a series or any piece of entertainment costs a great deal, and the creators themselves expect a profit and a return. That is yet another reason Thailand’s entertainment series keep going around in circles—because the meaningful ones don’t sell and can’t turn a profit for the people who make them.

So, the space for diversity in Thailand’s entertainment industry—though it has largely moved past the “being a gender minority is just for laughs” phase (meaning it still lingers, but far less than before)—remains trapped in a loop of ready-made plots: the formulaic love story between two men who must fit the mold, where the “top” has to be manly and the “bottom” has to be small and never effeminate (but still good-looking, of course), all so it can reach a level of success the studios find satisfactory.
