Every year in June, the global LGBTQ+ community comes together to celebrate Pride Month 2024, a time to express pride in who they are, respect differences, and push society toward greater acceptance of gender diversity.
Pride has its roots in the 1969 protests by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in New York City, who stood up against exclusion and discrimination. That event became a symbol of the movement demanding equal rights and freedom.
Concept and Objectives
Today, Pride has spread to every corner of the globe, with grand parades, joyful celebrations of difference, and campaigns to raise awareness, oppose discrimination, and push for policy changes that protect the rights of gender-diverse people. The core idea of Pride is to build a society of equality where everyone can live with dignity and be treated fairly, without being discriminated against because of their gender, gender identity, or sexual diversity.
Activities During Pride
In June, Pride events are held widely, such as:
- A grand Pride parade full of color and fun, expressing pride in one's identity.
- Concerts and live music performances by LGBTQ+ artists and guest performers to create a celebratory atmosphere.
- Workshops and training on rights, acceptance of gender diversity, and reducing gender bias.
- Art and photography exhibitions reflecting the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.
- Panel discussions and seminars led by expert speakers to share knowledge and discuss important issues.
- Information booths offering information, advice, and counseling, run by human rights organizations.
- Drag queen and drag king performances, a distinctive art form of the LGBTQ+ community.
- Sports competitions for the LGBTQ+ community to build unity and bring people together.
- Parties and social gatherings so that everyone can meet, share experiences, and build connections.
- Book launches and signings for new books on gender and sexual identity.
- Advocacy campaigns and marches demanding equality and fairness, continuing Pride's original purpose.
These activities all aim to raise awareness, reduce prejudice, and drive positive social change toward greater equality and acceptance of gender diversity.
The Role of Organizations and Companies
June is also a great opportunity for companies and organizations to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community through events or campaigns, such as:
- Providing financial support to human rights organizations or LGBTQ+ groups.
- Holding activities or training to build understanding and reduce gender bias within the organization.
- Adopting fair, non-discriminatory employment policies.
- Supporting products or services connected to the LGBTQ+ community and clearly showing their backing.
Actions like these help create a friendlier, more accepting environment within organizations, while demonstrating a commitment to promoting equality and diversity in society.
The History of Pride in Thailand
Pride celebrations in Thailand span several decades. The first event was reported in 1999 on the plaza in front of Siam Square, and events have been held regularly since, though there was a period when they paused because of the country's political situation.
In 2005, Thai civil society groups came together to hold the first "Pride Walk" in the country's history on Silom Road, a significant step for the movement for the equal rights of LGBTQ+ people in Thailand.
Today, Pride events in Thailand have grown larger and more varied, including parades, concerts, and panel discussions, as well as advocacy on issues such as legal reform, public health services, and welfare for LGBTQ+ communities.

The Pride Parade takes place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, assembling at the plaza in front of the Nimibutr Building at the National Stadium, then proceeding along Rama I Road toward the Ratchaprasong Intersection, covering a distance of more than 2.5 kilometers.
