Every June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and to commemorate what happened at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. On June 27, 1969, a police raid led to the arrest of gay and lesbian patrons whose clothing did not conform to gender norms. The raid sparked a series of riots that became a turning point and the starting point for the legal fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

The rainbow flag is the symbol of Pride events. People wear it as a theme and carry rainbow-colored items to show their support. The flag has long stood for the diversity of gender and sexuality, and it represents the struggle for equality and for rights of every kind.

LGBTQ+ is a term for people of diverse genders and sexualities, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Some people write it as LGBT, while others use LGBTIQ or LGBTQA. In every form, it refers to a community of people with diverse genders and sexualities.

  • Lesbian: a woman who is attracted to other women.
  • Gay: a man who is attracted to other men. For some people the word also refers to anyone attracted to the same sex, also known as homosexual.
  • Bisexual: a person who is attracted to both men and women.
  • Transgender: a person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, such as a person assigned female who identifies as a man, or a person assigned male who identifies as a woman. This is often shortened to trans.
  • Queer: a broad term for people whose gender or sexuality does not fit conventional social norms and is not confined to any fixed category.
