When Can It Detect HIV?

A laboratory fourth-generation test using venous blood usually has a window period of about 18–45 days. Rapid finger-stick versions may take longer. NAT can detect infection in roughly 10–33 days but is not routine screening for everyone. These are ranges, not guaranteed dates.

How Should a Negative Result Be Read?

A negative result means no evidence was detected by that method at that time. Repeat testing is needed before the end of the test’s window period. A negative result after the full window with no new exposure is highly reliable. PEP or PrEP can change the testing plan, so tell the provider.
