Basic Eligibility
Both parties must be at least 18, must not already be married, and must not fall within another prohibited relationship or condition under the Civil and Commercial Code. A person below the general age of legal majority may require consent under family law. Ask the district office to review an individual case before the registration date. Older explanations treating 20 as the minimum marriage age should not be used.
Documents to Confirm in Advance
- Thai national identity cards and household-registration records, or other identity documents accepted by the registrar.
- Evidence that an earlier marriage ended, such as a divorce certificate or death certificate.
- Consent documents where required by law.
- For a foreign national: passport, evidence of freedom to marry, authentication, and translations as required by the registration office.
Foreign-document requirements vary by issuing country and office. Obtain a written checklist in advance rather than booking travel from a generic online list.
Place, Timing, and Fees
Registration is available at district offices, and some offices may provide off-site services under applicable rules. Appointments, witnesses, opening times, and fees can differ or change. Confirm them directly with the office instead of relying on an old fixed fee quoted online.
What to Discuss Before Marriage
Marriage affects property, debt, inheritance, maintenance, family decisions, and divorce. Partners should disclose important assets and liabilities, consider a prenuptial agreement where appropriate, and plan wills or parenthood for their circumstances. Spousal status does not automatically resolve every issue involving legal parenthood or assisted reproduction.
