What Happened?
The donor cells carried a protective CCR5 variant that makes entry difficult for some HIV strains. After transplant and ART interruption, no viral rebound was detected during the reported follow-up. Researchers use “remission” because undetectable tests cannot prove that every infected cell has been eliminated forever.
Why Is This Not Used for Everyone?
Stem-cell transplantation can cause severe infection, graft-versus-host disease, organ injury, and death. It requires a compatible donor and is usually justified only to treat cancer. ART is far safer and highly effective for most people living with HIV.
