Undetectable is confirmed by a laboratory result

“Undetectable” means the amount of HIV in the blood is below the level that a particular laboratory test can measure or report. It does not mean HIV has left the body. Laboratory reporting limits vary by test, while clinical guidance may use a defined viral-suppression threshold. Ask the care team what the latest result means and when monitoring should be repeated.

Ongoing treatment keeps the virus suppressed. If medicines are interrupted, appointments are missed, or access becomes uncertain, contact the clinic and make a plan. A previous result should not be used to assume current suppression without follow-up.

U=U is a fact about sexual transmission

U=U stands for Undetectable = Untransmittable. A person with HIV who takes treatment and maintains viral suppression has zero risk of transmitting HIV to sexual partners. This is both an evidence-based prevention message and a powerful tool against stigma.

U=U does not prevent other STIs or pregnancy. Condoms, STI testing, contraception, and other methods remain available according to personal goals. An HIV-negative partner may still choose to discuss PrEP for personal reassurance or protection in other situations, but PrEP is not medically required to prevent sexual HIV transmission when the partner with HIV maintains viral suppression.

This is not the point where your life or your future ends.

Chakkaphat Boonruang, MD Translated from the Life Forward interview, Episode 5

HIV does not cancel love or the future

People with HIV can have relationships, marry, and plan families. Preconception and pregnancy care should involve a team experienced in HIV so that treatment and reproductive health are coordinated for everyone involved.

Disclosure is a sensitive personal decision shaped by trust and safety. Where there is concern about violence, loss of housing, or employment, plan with a trusted counsellor or organisation first. No one should disclose another person’s HIV status without permission.

Turn evidence into confidence

  • Take treatment consistently and attend viral-load monitoring
  • Ask whether the latest result meets the relevant viral-suppression threshold
  • Use person-centred language and challenge HIV stigma
  • Never use HIV status to pressure, control, or publicly disclose another person’s status
  • Read the Love Foundation U=U guide and share reliable evidence with partners
