In recent years, the mental health of transgender and nonbinary people has received steadily growing attention, both across society and in research. Even so, in-depth data on the lived experiences, minority stress, and environmental factors that affect the mental health of these groups in Southeast Asia remain limited, especially in the ASEAN+3 countries, whose cultural, social, and public health contexts differ significantly from one another. For this reason, a research team from the Institute of Science Tokyo has launched a research project titled “Mental Health and Related Factors of Transgender and Nonbinary Persons in ASEAN+3” to study the factors affecting the mental health of transgender and nonbinary people through a mental health survey in the region. The research focuses on understanding at both the individual level and the level of social structures, such as family acceptance, access to health services, experiences of discrimination, and daily living environments, all of which are important factors that shape overall quality of life.
Why the mental health of transgender and nonbinary people matters
Today, the mental health of transgender and nonbinary people is receiving increasing attention internationally, because these groups often face minority stress, whether through discrimination, stigma, or a lack of acceptance from family and society, all of which directly affect quality of life and mental well-being. In the ASEAN+3 region, despite its great cultural diversity, in-depth data on the mental health of transgender and nonbinary people is still limited. Having accurate and comprehensive data is therefore key to developing policies and health services that genuinely meet their needs.
About the research and the online survey
The research titled “Mental Health and Related Factors of Transgender and Nonbinary Persons in ASEAN+3,” conducted by a research team from the Institute of Science Tokyo, aims to study the factors that affect the mental health of gender-diverse people across 13 countries, including Thailand. The survey has been approved by a research ethics committee and is designed to collect data systematically, covering both personal and social factors such as access to health services, experiences of discrimination, and living environment. Importantly, your responses are kept confidential and used only for this research.

The survey is open to participants in both Thai and English, takes only a short time to complete, and offers a small token of appreciation for those who take part. The project will accept responses only until the end of April 2026.
