HIV/Aids Risk in Thailand
This article is not there to give you any kind of advice if you should use a condom or not. And i also will not judge you in this particular matter. I write this Article to inform other people about what i found out about this Topic. What you will do in the end with this information is your decision. Like a Thai would say: “It’s up to you”
There are basically 3 Numbers i want to show you. The Numbers are from a Survey which took place in Bangkok 2007.
HIV prevalence among “venue-based” Female Sex Workers. Basically these are all the Girls which you have to pay Barfine for. (2.5%)
HIV prevalence among “non-venue-based” Female Sex Workers(also known as Freelancers). These are standing on the Streets, in Front of Nana Plaza or at any other public places, waiting for customers. (22.7%)
There are no exact numbers for Ladyboys in Bangkok. Nationwide the prevalence is at 12,7%, but the numbers for Bangkok alone are definitely higher. It’s being estimated that HIV prevalence among these group is about 3-10 times as high compared to females.
Does it mean if i take one of the Freelancers to my hotel and don’t use a condom(or if it breaks) there is a 22.7% chance of getting HIV as well?
The short answer is NO! There is a (small) chance that you’ll get infected. But let’s look into the Wikipedia Article about this subject.
Now we have everything to to the Math.
2.5%*0.01% | 2.5%*0.38% = 0.00025%-0.0095% (per Vaginal intercourse)
2.5%*0.03% = 0.00075% (per Anal intercourse)
22.7%*0.01% | 22.7%*0.38% = 0.00227%-0.08626% (per Vaginal intercourse)
22.7%*0.03% = 0.00681% (per Anal intercourse)
While using a condom is highly recommended, i understand there are people out there who don’t want to use one. But you should know that the risk of getting HIV is significantly higher if you take a Freelancer or a Ladyboy. And while the overall chance of getting HIV is relatively low always remember: Your next “intercourse” could be the toxic one!
